As sculptors we know the time, money and heartache that can go into trying to beg, borrow and buy the heavy duty equipment and space needed to make sculpture. It has taken us a long time to get the table saw, band saw, welding equipment, etc. all in one place. We always wonder about how much more work we would have made had all these things been readily available to us from the beginning. This is what gave us the idea to create the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym, a community based sculpture workshop that would operate similar to a gym membership. Sculptors and craftspeople would pay for a membership and get access to the above tools (and more). We would also offer lockers (storage space) and personal training sessions (one-on-one help with projects). With our experience running and working in college sculpture shops, commercial foundries, sculpture fabrication shops, and classrooms, we know that we have what it takes to help the sculptors of Philadelphia get their work made and out into the world without chopping off any of their fingers or catching on fire
So, what type of equipment do we have? All kinds of stuff...First we'll start with a wood shop, outfitted with at least one of each of the following: SawStop Table saw, bandsaw, drill press, belt and disc sanders, an assortment of hand tools and clamps, and much more! Next, a metal shop with welders, horizontal bandsaw, drill press, various hand tools, clamps and more. We have a small foundry set up for aluminum, bronze and iron casting. A ventilated mold making and casting studio for working with plaster, resins and mold rubbers. There is also a modeling studio, for independent projects and group classes and a gallery space for monthly exhibitions. We also have studio spaces available. Need something fabricated? We can do that too. Contact us at philadelphiasculpturegym[at]gmail.com for more details.
